Mary Ann Irwin, Secretary/Treasurer and Acting President of CA-AAUP and long- time contingent faculty member at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California, California State University East Bay, and elsewhere, has been appointed by AAUP President Rudy Fichtenbaum to the AAUP Committee on Contingency & the Profession. This standing committee of the AAUP works on a variety of topics of importance to higher education and faculty with a special focus on issues related to contingency faculty appointments. Members of this Committee work to improve conditions for contingent faculty members and to reverse the trend toward part-tme and non-tenture-track appointments.
AAUP's One Faculty project is collecting examples of contract and handbook language that addresses job security, salary and benefits, academic freedom and participation in governance as each topic affects contingent faculty. If you can help with this project, either for your own campus or by conducting some research on policies at other campuses, please contact Gwen Bradley, AAUP Director of the Department of External Relations.
