Senator Jim Beall (D - Campbell) who co-authored the audit request noted the ACCJC "virtually operates unfettered with little to no oversight yet its decisions have a direct impact on the world's biggest system of higher education with over two million students. The public and the Legislature deserve to understand how this commission makes and arrives at decisions that affect the future of so many Californians.'' The audit request was sponsored by the California Community College Independents with supporting testimony from FACCC, CFT, CTA, and Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D - San Francisco). Yesterday, the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) approved a request for the Bureau of State Audits to examine costs and processes associated with the accreditation of California Community Colleges. The audit will study three districts selected by the auditor, two of which are on sanction, and is expected to require 2,700 hours of work over a seven-month period. In presenting the need for the audit, Senator Jim Nielsen (R - Roseville) described an unacceptable level of arrogance from Dr. Barbara Beno, President of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), and criticized the Commission's document shredding policy. Nielsen added that this "does not give us comfort that all is well how they are treating our California Community Colleges."

Dept. of education (DOE) chastises accrediting commission for community & junior colleges (ACCJC)8/15/2013 In a letter dated August 13, 2013, the DOE notified the ACCJC that it failed to follow federal guidelines in its sanctions against City College of San Francisco. As a result, the DOE initiated an "adverse action" against the ACCJC. The ACCJC has one year to correct the errors identified in the letter, or else face a DOE decision to "limit, suspend or terminate ACCJC's recognition" as an accreditation agency. click on link below to download the Department of Education letter to the Accrediting Commission for Community & Jr. Colleges concerning City College of San Francisco.
