san  francisco  art  institute  adjuncts  file  for  union  elections

Adjunct faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute filed for a union election on April 8, 2014.  They are working to form a union and we support their right to organize. The visiting faculty comprise more than three quarters of the faculty at SFAI, and yet they cannot earn any measure of job security, even after many years of dedicated service. Pay is out of step with the cost of living, and there is no opportunity for advancement. The institute offers no health or retirement benefits to visiting faculty. Such conditions are detrimental to the efforts of faculty to teach effectively, to develop as artists or scholars and to contribute to the intellectual life of the SFAI community.

We believe visiting faculty demonstrate a passionate commitment to students, and that their contributions are vital to scholarship and the arts in the Bay Area. They are now standing up for dignity and a say in their working conditions. They recognize that forming a union will allow them to achieve pay increases, improved job security, better processes for teaching assignment, fair and transparent evaluations, access to benefits, routes to advancement, and a voice in institutional governance. We support the right of adjuncts at San Francisco Art Institute to organize. We ask that the administration refrain from using student tuition funds or other institutional resources to interfere with the unionization effort; and we pledge to speak out against any intimidation or retaliation that might result as contingent faculty invoke their rights.

I'm glad this is happening to SFAI, getting a union, maybe. Charles Demaris himself is nothing more than an art world puppet promoting his neoliberal ideologies while him and his black clad dressed art snobs and board of directors party about on that beautiful piece of real estate.

I'm glad to see the adjuncts fighting, for their own interests; which I hope it makes SFAI a better art school, but will most likely disrupt and formulate what creativity it has left, which is next to none. I say all this because I got kicked out of SFAI for not abiding by their "community standards" when a false flag was raised by a female student making accusation of sexual contact without consent. Our relationship took place outside of school. She lied about me climbing into her bed and stealing all her pain pills on the way out. She lied and said she filed a police report. SFAI took the issue into their own hands and put sanctions against me. I raised hell, made an art project about it in the Mission at ATA. Female groups from the school targeted me. I wasn't having it. I raised more hell, and then they kicked me out. The whole administration is curupt there, including some of the instructors such as Keith Boadwee. Keith Boadwee ridiculed me in a false slandering of me being homophobic. Luke Butler, painting instructor can barely stand on two feet. Nicole Archer teaches 9th grade history in a 30K+ living, college environment. This place is sick and lazy on all levels. Any lawyers out there, ohh, I have a great story about SFAI, if anyone is ready to stand up for something. SFAI is about killing art. On my way out, I told Charles that the spirit of SFAI leaves with me.
